Old San Juan is a walkable city, but outside the city walls, there’s much more to see.  Taxis can get expensive if you want to explore and enjoy all the interesting places to visit in the capital city of San Juan.  After renting a car, one of your challenges may be finding a place to park.  We drove around a lot and spent much time putting together information on parking so you can spend your valuable time exploring the city.

This page and the Parking Guides were created to provide you useful information and tips about parking garages, parking lots, free and metered street parking, valet parking, and hotel & casino parking in the main San Juan tourist areas.

Below you’ll find parking guides for San Juan International Airport, historic Old San Juan, Condado, Puerta de Tierra, the Convention Center business district (Puerto Rico Convention Center, Pan American Cruise Pier, Isla Grande Airport), Ocean Park Beach, and Isla Verde.

Please Note:  We got numerous messages from readers asking about where to park, so we spend a tremendous amount of time and effort putting together this information. If you find this article helpful, please share it, don’t copy it and paste it somewhere else.

The following information is provided for general use, rates and phone numbers may have changed. We periodically update this page by calling ourselves or when updates are submitted.  If you find an error, please contact us so we may correct it.

Happy travels and thank you for visiting San Juan.

General Parking Tips

Parking (Estacionamiento) garages and parking lots typically cost more per hour in New San Juan tourist areas than in historical Old San Juan.  Garages and lots typically have spaces available.  If you prefer to try and park for free on the street, make sure to get to your destination early as spaces are taken quickly.  Most hotels and resorts with casinos offer daily guest parking in secure garages and lots and Free parking for casino members (membership free with ID).

Methods of Payment: Some parking garages and lots accept ATH/direct debit, and VISA/MasterCard instead of cash.  However, it is always best to carry cash; and you’ll need quarters for metered street parking.

Street Parking

If you have some extra time and don’t mind walking a few blocks, it may pay off to get up early and drive around a little to find free street parking.  Just as in the U.S., you may get ticketed/fined if you park on the street where the curb is yellow (commercial / taxi use only) and most definitely if colored red (fire hydrant) or blue (disabled only).  Free street parking is hardest to find in Old San Juan and near beaches, hotels/resorts, casinos, shopping, and other tourist travel areas.  The farthest from tourist areas you park, the less police presence you’ll see.  Just like any other city, common sense should be practiced, don’t leave valuables in the car such as travel documents, always keep those inside the safe in your hotel room.

Metered Street Parking

  • Look for meters or “Estacionamiento Pagando Metro” signs (yellow & white)

Cruise Piers Parking

Cruise Pier Parking Tips

The Port of San Juan is the busiest port in the Caribbean with many cruises departing from the capital city of Puerto Rico.  Most of the cruise lines that embark from San Juan leave from the Pan American Pier, which is located southeast across the San Antonio Canal from Old San Juan.  It is next to the Isla Grande Aiport at the Puerto Rico Convention Center District.  Unfortunately, there is no overnight parking available at the Pan American Pier terminals and no parking facilities within walking distance, but there are other options as explained below.  If your cruise line leaves from a pier in Old San Juan, there are some parking options within reasonable walking distance of the piers.

Condado & Puerta de Tierra Parking

Condado Parking Tips

Condado offers visitors a great variety of restaurants, water sports, shops and regular events.  At the heart of Condado is Ventana al Mar, from there you can basically walk to most places of interest.   If you're a tourist renting a car or driving from other towns around the island, Condado offers plenty of convenient parking at reasonable rates.

Condado has a lot of parking garages and outdoor lots with many spaces available 24 hours a day, but metered and free street parking are typically harder to find especially on weekends and holidays.  Most of the parking garages are part of the casino hotels and resorts and most of the lots are managed by Valera Parking, Central Parking, or American Parking.

If you're headed to the Puerta de Tierra community (between Condado and historic Old San Juan) to enjoy Escambron Beach or visit Luis Muñoz Rivera Park, there is convenient parking there as well.

Free Street Parking

The most convenient free parking on the street can be found while driving east along Calle Magdalena and around Plaza Antonia Quiñones.

Free Street Parking - Isla Verde

Free Street Parking

Finding a free parking spot on the street is as challenging in Isla Verde as in other tourist areas of San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Although very limited availability, if you arrive early in the morning, or are just plain lucky, you may find a parking place on the main street of Isla Verde Avenue (Avenida Isla Verde) heading west where there are well-marked walkway signs for access to the beach.  You can also try Calle Tartak for El Alambique Beach access and Calle Violeta or Calle Dalia for Pine Grove Beach access.

Ocean Park Beach Parking

Parking Tips

Unlike other beach areas of greater San Juan, you can typically find a free parking spot within walking distance of the beach.  Just make sure to arrive early to get a good spot.

Free Parking Lots - Ocean Park

  • There is a free parking lot on the west side of Barbosa Park along Calle Soldado Serrano.
  • There are 2 free parking lots on the north side of Barbosa Park, right across the street from the beach, along Calle General Patton.
  • There is also a free parking lot on the east side of the park, at the tennis courts, on Avenida Las Americas.

Free Street Parking - Ocean Park

Free Street Parking

Since Ocean Park, San Juan is primarily a residential community, finding a free parking spot on the street, if the aforementioned lots are full, should not be too difficult.  You just may have to walk a little farther as compared to parking in the lots at Barbosa Park.

  • There are a limited number of spots along the east side of Barbosa Park on Avenida Las Americas.
  • If heading east on Calle General Patton, turn left onto Calle Park Boulevard and if you’re lucky, you’ll find a spot on the right-hand side – and right across from the beach.
  • You can access the western beach on Calle Santa Ana and Calle Tapia, but parking spots are harder to come by than around Barbosa Park.

Old San Juan Parking

Parking Tips - Old San Juan

Although beautiful and charming, 5 centuries ago when these narrow streets and cities were planned, cars were not in the equation.  Parking is already difficult for local residents and businesses, so perhaps your greatest challenge when visiting will be finding a free place to park along the streets.  The easiest way to find a quick parking space is by using one of the parking garages.  See the map below for parking lots and garages.

When the city is buzzing with festivities such as popular festivals (there are quite a few throughout the year), plan on getting to Old San Juan early to get a parking space.  If you're staying in the Condado, Ocean Park or the Convention districts, it may be best to leave your car parked at your hotel and get a taxi into Old San Juan.

The most convenient parking garages are easily found as soon as you enter the old city.  If you're entering the city through Avenida Munoz Rivera, you'll pass San Cristobal Fort on your right.  Take a left at the main Plaza Colon, continue straight, then swing around Teatro Tapia.  Take a right onto Calle Recinto Sur and you will immediately see public parking garages on your left.  The first one has more clearance and is newer but more expensive.  The second one is much cheaper, more frequently used, and painted with bright colors in honor of Felisa Rincón de Gautier.

As you enter the garage, take a ticket and keep it with you.  Do not leave it in your car.  You will either pay at a cashier's window or ticketing machine on the main floor before returning to your car to exit.  Make sure you have enough cash to pay, some places do not accept credit cards.  After you pay, you will have 15 minutes to insert the paid ticket at the exit to leave the garage.

Free Street Parking in Old San Juan

Your best chance to find free street parking is in the early morning on weekends.  There is a long stretch of curb parking if you head east on Avenida de la Constitucion away from historical Old San Juan.  The free parking is on the right side of the street - in front of Casa España (you'll see the Capitol Building ahead to the left as well).
