For visitors wishing to explore the capital city of San Juan and keeping travel expenses to a minimum, it is possible to enjoy all the attractions and fun things to do and interesting places by riding a bus.  With a little planning and a little patience, you can enjoy the city and save money.

The Puerto Rico Metropolitan Bus Authority (AMA – Autoridad Metropolitana de Autobuses), aka AMA-Metrobus, a corporation owned by the Puerto Rico Department of Transportation and Public Works, (DTOP – Departamento de Transportación y Obras Públicas) manages the public bus transportation system for the greater San Juan tourist and metropolitan areas.  It has done so since 1959 – making it one of the first public transport authorities ever established in the Americas.  It prides itself on being dependable, safe, very affordable, and comfortable for people with disabilities.

San Juan Puerto Rico Bus SystemThere is a main bus terminal in Old San Juan directly across from Cruise Ship Pier 4 (Muelle 4) (see map below).  The DTOP/AMA office is on the north side of the terminal next to the Covadonga Parking payment lobby, where bus route maps and schedules are provided.  You may also call the AMA at (787) 294-0500 or (787) 250-6064 for bus routes, schedules, and additional information.
